Mexican Art

Lately I've been interested in Mexican art. I love the ever present religious aspect, the colors, the skulls, the use of patterns and colors. There is a dark spirituality to Mexican art but it isn't depressing. It seems to be matter of fact and sometimes comical. References to death and the afterlife seem to say that spirits live on after death and even play a part in our own lives.

Frida Khalo's art has seen a huge revival in the last few years and seems even cliche to talk about. However, I find great importance in the truth she conveyed in her works. She seemed to be constantly analyzing her life and herself through imagery and symbolism. Here are a couple I thought were interesting for what she was trying to convey. For Mexican art, it maintains a style that contains that vibrant color and "in your face" message. But she seems to stand out among the rest as well for this genre. I can't quite put my finger on the difference, but it sets her work aside from the style of Mexican art and puts her into a category of the greats.

I wish that I could have the visual power of self analysis that she seemed to have mastered!
